I got a whole new kind of religious harassment claim today.

Kinja'd!!!

The guy, a Mexican farmworker, claims to be a member of what his lawyer says is a traditional Mexican religion - Our Lady of the Holy Death. I don’t understand their core beliefs, which apparently center on being metal as fuck. Any Mexican Oppos ever hear of this?

He claims he has distinctive tattoos declaring his faith , and his co-workers allegedly harassed him for being a Satanist. His lawyer insists that he is not a Satanist, and describes what seems to be some kind of Mexican Wicca death cult. I don’t think it is worth much money, but I am impressed. I really hope they hold services at the Titty Twister.

This job is never boring. Weird shit happens all the time.

Santa Muerte. There’s a lot of very interesting Catholic offshoot religions in Mexico. They are generally much more metal than the Protestant offshoots we have here. There’s a town called Guadalupe in the middle of Phoenix that was founded by Yaqui Indians from northern Mexico over a hundred years ago. They were fleeing persecution from Porfirio Diaz. Their brand of awesome melds together their native spirituality (which focused on the deer) and Christianity. Holy shit do those guys put on one hell of an Easter performance.

They gained some notoriety years ago when a woman sacrificed some people to the Santa de Muerte. Really she’s just a folk saint thought to be derived from old Aztec beliefs morphed into catholicism, atrributed to granting a peaceful transition to the afterlife and such, not murder. But the gruesome imagery suggests otherwise to some, which is why a lot of drug cartels claim to honor her.

Anyway, that's another episode of "Random Shit Alfalfa Knows For Some Reason"

I know a little. Santa Muerte. Definitely a real thing and could definitely get him harassed by mainstream Catholic Mexicans. It’s not really any more a “Wicca death cult” than other types of local “saints” and pre-Catholic idols in predominately Catholic countries is—think of all the unofficial local “saints” in Sicily (and the venerated relics thereof), apparitions of the Virgin Mary throughout Central America, and various unofficial patron saints for certain professions in France and Spain—except that it’s sort of like if the Grim Reaper was a saint, but like a kindly goth saint. It’s inordinately popular with poor, oppressed, criminal, or otherwise outcast populations. It’s definitely not Satanism but is also definitely metal as fuck.

From a practical/legal perspective, I would keep an eye out for any indication that the harassment is really just a cover for homophobia in this case because Santa Muerte is kind of the unofficial patron saint of the LGBT community in some places.

Yes, it’s a legitimate religion in Mexico. It’s part cultural, too, and a product of their history.

Far as I’m concerned, people need to stop being such judgmental cocksch nozzs.

Today You Learned: this is an actual fucking religious belief because religions are fucking nuts.

Nuestra Senora de la Santa Muerte is CATHOLIC , I shit you not, and associated with healing, protection, and safe delivery to the afterlife .

You know the Day of the Dead? YES. THAT’S HER. So yes. It’s traditional Mexican religion and Catholicism .

And worship is a transactional relationship . You do something for her - a candle, some money at a shrine, a cigarette, or getting a tattoo of her (which is extremely common) - and she does something for you. New job, pay raise, cure your cold. Don’t do what you promised, she might just take your whole family.

Now here is where you are about to get fucked if the guy has legitimate religious tattoos: Santa Muerte is also seen as the protector of LGBT communities .

And it’s got somewhere north of 20 million followers, that the Catholic church and others deliberately misrepresent the beliefs of. Because hey remember that part about LGBT communities ? Nevermind the overt racism because the cartel decided to borrow it to make a cult .

TL,DR: you literally just walked into a Title VII time bomb with a possible side of California sexual orientation discrimination.

Is this a Santa Muerte thing? If so, I’ve heard that it can have a wider following, but I’ve only known it to be associated with folks tied to drug trafficking organizations. In that earlier life, tattoos to that effect in the context of someone making c ontact with the ‘thorities would’ve been a reason to do a field contact card on that person and refer it to the gang unit guys.

I've heard of this. Despite heavy catholic following, there is some undelying worship of death, who is a sexy skeleton lady if you are into that sort of thing. Yeah, this is real. The artwork is pretty rad too.its big with the cartels but also a ton of regular people too.

Not that it should be ok to harass an actual Satanist.
